Effects of pore connectivity and water saturation on matrix permeability of deep gas shale

Shale matrix permeability is an important indicator for evaluating gas transport and production. However, the effects of pore connectivity water saturation on in deep shales have not been adequately studied. In this study, Yichang area Middle Yangtze was characterized using three methods. These included determination apparent different directions via pulse-decay, also obtained Gas Research Institute method, connected network mercury injection capillary pressure technique. The results revealed a significant difference between horizontal vertical shales. smaller size multiple network, larger effective tortuosity lower permeability. Comparison permeabilities combined microscopic observations that microfractures laminae were dominant channels. Importantly, decreased exponentially with increasing saturation, vapor adsorption experiments revealing occupation pores pore-throat spaces than 10 nm diameter main reason decrease Collectively, proposed method index shale reservoirs sweet spot selection production prediction around globe.
